Altun Ha – The Magnificent Mayan Ruins of Belize

Located in Belize, Altun Ha is one of Central America’s most magnificent Mayan ruins. The site is made up of two plazas surrounded by more than 13 structures, including two large pyramids. A Brief History of Altun Ha

Altun Ha is a Maya archaeological site located in the Belizean jungle, 45 kilometers north of Belize City. It was a major trading center during the Classic period (250-900 AD). The site was first discovered in 1963 and is believed to have been occupied from around 1000 BC to around 1000 AD. Archaeological evidence suggests that the city was at its peak between 600-900 AD, when it is thought to have been home to some 10,000 people.

 

Exploring the Mayan Ruins of Altun Ha

Altun Ha is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Belize and is a must-see for anyone visiting the country. The site is open daily from 8am to 4pm, with special nighttime visits available for those who want to experience the ruins in a more magical and mysterious atmosphere.

Upon arriving at Altun Ha, visitors are greeted by the impressive Temple of Masonry Altars, a two-level structure that is the largest and most impressive building at the site. The Temple of Masonry Altars is home to the world-famous “The Jade Head of Kinich Ahau”, a jade sculpture of the Mayan Sun God.

The site is also home to several other impressive structures, including the Temple of the Green Tomb, the Temple of the Sun God and the Temple of the Moon. Visitors can also explore the site’s two plazas, which were used for public ceremonies and rituals.
