Albania, officially known as the Republic of Albania, is a country in Southeast Europe on the Balkan Peninsula. To the west, it has a coastline along the Adriatic Sea, and to the southwest, it borders the Ionian Sea. The capital and largest city is Tirana.
Albania has a rich and diverse history that dates back to ancient times. The region was inhabited by the Illyrians and later became part of the Roman and Byzantine Empires. During the Middle Ages, Albania was ruled by various regional powers before falling under Ottoman rule for several centuries. Albania declared its independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1912.
The country has a varied landscape, featuring mountains, rivers, lakes, and a beautiful coastline. Key natural attractions include the Albanian Riviera, the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Butrint and Gjirokastër, and the stunning peaks of the Albanian Alps.
Albania underwent significant political and economic changes after the fall of its communist regime in the early 1990s, transitioning to a market economy and democratic governance. Despite challenges, Albania has made considerable progress in terms of economic development and infrastructure improvements.
The culture of Albania is characterized by a mix of influences from its history, including Ottoman, Greek, and Roman elements. The country is known for its traditional music, dance, and folk art. Albanian cuisine features Mediterranean flavors, with dishes such as byrek (a savory pastry) and tavë kosi (baked lamb with yogurt).
In recent years, Albania has been increasingly popular as a tourist destination, known for its unspoiled beaches, historic sites, and welcoming hospitality.
