History of Fort Duvernette

The fort became a key stronghold in the Seminole Wars and was eventually decommissioned in 1845.
After the wars, Fort Duvernette remained abandoned until it was purchased by the city of Jacksonville in the 1840s. The fort was then used as a quarantine station, a safe haven for freed slaves, and a military base during the Civil War.
In the early 1900s, the fort was acquired by the United States Navy and it remained in use until the early 1950s. After the Navy’s departure, the fort was abandoned once more until it was eventually restored and opened to the public in 1986.
