A Brief History of Horton Plains

Horton Plains was declared a National Park in 1988 and is managed by the Department of Wildlife Conservation. However, prior to its designation as a National Park, the area was used for farming and other agricultural activities by the local community. The British colonists also used the area as a hunting reserve. The name ‘Horton Plains’ was given to the area in honour of Sir Robert Wilmot Horton, who was the British Governor of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) from 1831 to 1837.
