History of Mount Vernon

Mount Vernon was established in 1735 by George Washington’s father, Augustine Washington. The estate passed to George Washington in 1754 when Augustine died. Washington began to expand and improve the estate. He built a wharf, planted a large garden, and made other improvements to the property. He also built the grand mansion which is the centerpiece of the estate.

The mansion was built in 1758 and is a two-story Georgian-style home. The mansion is filled with antiques, artwork, and furnishings that belonged to Washington and his family. After Washington’s death in 1799, his wife Martha lived in the mansion until her death in 1802.

The site was opened to the public in 1858 as a memorial to George Washington. In 1960, the estate was designated a National Historic Landmark by the U.S. Department of the Interior.
