A Brief History of Marmashen Monastery

Marmashen Monastery is a medieval Armenian monastery located in the Tavush Province, in the far north of Armenia. The monastery is believed to have been constructed in the 9th century, during the Bagratid dynasty. At the time, it was known as the “Princely Monastery of Marmashen” and served as a center of learning and culture for the region.

In the 15th century, Marmashen Monastery underwent extensive renovations and was renamed the “Holy Monastery of Marmashen”. During this period, the monastery complex was expanded and the main church was adorned with beautiful frescoes.

The monastery was unfortunately abandoned in the 18th century, during the Russo-Turkish war, and fell into disrepair. However, in the twentieth century, the monastery was restored and is now a popular tourist destination.

What to See at Marmashen Monastery

Marmashen Monastery is a stunning complex of buildings that offer visitors a unique glimpse of medieval Armenian architecture. The main church, which is the oldest building in the complex, is adorned with beautiful frescoes depicting scenes from the Bible. Other attractions include the bell tower, which is the tallest building in the complex, and the refectory, which is a large hall used for communal meals.

The grounds of the monastery are also worth exploring. Here, visitors can admire the stunning stone carvings, which depict scenes from the Bible, and take in the breathtaking views of the surrounding forests.

Visiting Marmashen Monastery

Marmashen Monastery is open to visitors all year round. The best time to visit is during the summer months, when the weather is warm and the grounds are in full bloom. Admission is free, but visitors are asked to make a small donation to help maintain the monastery.

When visiting the monastery, make sure to dress modestly and be respectful of the sacred surroundings. Photography is allowed, but visitors are not permitted to touch the frescoes or stone carvings.
