Boldt Castle: A Timeless Feat of Architecture

Situated on Heart Island, Boldt Castle is a timeless feat of architecture located in the Thousand Islands region of New York. It was built in 1900 by George C. Boldt, a wealthy hotelier who wished to construct a grandiose summer home as a display of his love for his wife, Louise. Today, Boldt Castle is a popular tourist destination, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors each year who come to marvel at its beauty and explore its rich history.

History of Boldt Castle

George and Louise Boldt were married in 1892 and they soon after began to envision their dream home on Heart Island. The land was purchased in 1900 and construction began shortly thereafter. Designed by architect Alfred B. Wood of New York City, Boldt Castle was meant to be a reflection of Louise’s German heritage. It was built to feature six stories, 120 rooms, a grand ballroom, and several other luxurious amenities.

Unfortunately, the dream of Boldt Castle was never realized. In 1904, Louise suddenly passed away and George was devastated. Heartbroken, he halted all construction and never returned to the island. The castle remained unfinished until the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority took ownership of the property in 1977. After years of work and restoration, Boldt Castle was finally reopened to the public in 1977.
