History of Stella Maris Monastery

The Monastery is named after the Latin phrase “Stella Maris” which translates to “Star of the Sea”. The Monastery was built in 1875 on the site of an ancient Carmelite Monastery, which was destroyed by the Ottoman Empire in the 18th century. The Monastery was used as a base for the Lazarist Missionaries to spread the Christian faith in the area.
The Monastery was also used as a place of refuge for Jewish families during the Second World War. The Monastery was also used as a place of rest and recovery for wounded soldiers from both sides of the conflict.
