Saudi Arabia, officially known as the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, is a country located in the Middle East, occupying most of the Arabian Peninsula. It is bordered by Jordan and Iraq to the north, Kuwait to the northeast, Qatar, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates to the east, Oman to the southeast, and Yemen to the south. It has coastlines along the Red Sea to the west and the Persian Gulf to the east. The capital city is Riyadh.
Geographically, Saudi Arabia is known for its vast deserts, including the Rub’ al Khali (Empty Quarter), the largest continuous sand desert in the world. The country also features mountain ranges in the west, oases, and a diverse range of flora and fauna. The climate is mostly arid, with extreme temperatures and minimal rainfall.
Saudi Arabia’s history is deeply connected to the origins of Islam, as it is home to the two holiest cities in Islam: Mecca and Medina. Mecca is the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad and the site of the annual Hajj pilgrimage, one of the Five Pillars of Islam. The Kingdom was founded in 1932 by Abdulaziz Ibn Saud, who unified the various tribes and regions of the Arabian Peninsula under his rule.
Economically, Saudi Arabia is one of the world’s leading oil producers and exporters, with the petroleum sector accounting for a significant portion of its GDP, government revenue, and export earnings. The state-owned oil company, Saudi Aramco, is one of the largest and most valuable companies globally. In recent years, the Kingdom has been diversifying its economy through Vision 2030, an ambitious plan to reduce dependence on oil, develop public service sectors such as health, education, infrastructure, recreation, and tourism, and promote private sector growth.
Culturally, Saudi Arabia is deeply rooted in Islamic traditions and Bedouin heritage. The country’s culture emphasizes hospitality, family, and religious observance. Arabic is the official language, and the legal system is based on Islamic law (Sharia). Saudi society is characterized by its adherence to conservative customs, although recent years have seen significant social reforms, including increased rights for women and efforts to open up the society to cultural and entertainment activities.
Saudi Arabia faces several challenges, including economic diversification, managing the balance between tradition and modernization, and addressing regional geopolitical dynamics. The Kingdom plays a crucial role in Middle Eastern politics and is a key player in organizations like the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).
Despite these challenges, Saudi Arabia continues to exert significant influence on the global stage due to its economic power, religious significance, and strategic location in the heart of the Middle East. The country’s ongoing transformation under Vision 2030 aims to position it as a more dynamic and diversified economy while preserving its rich cultural and religious heritage.
